Luxury hotel

IN EACH OF THE FOLLOWING auctions, three plausible South hands have been con- structed. Only one South hand is properly con- sistent with all his bids to date — which one? What should the other two hands have done dif- ferently? Simple, natural bidding is used with four-card Majors and a 12-14 1NT opener. Example: Answer: (b) is correct; hand (a) should open 111, not 14; hand (c) should pass 24.

Assume Rubber Bridge with Neither Side Vul- nerable on all five problems.

The winner will be the first correct entry drawn out of a hat on 6 October. Post/fax to The Spec- tator. The prize is one week's luxury bridge holi- day for two at Reid's Hotel in Madeira. The competition will be judged by The Spectator and our decision is final. All the normal restrictions apply. Answers will be given in a fortnight's time.
