The daily papers publish a letter dated " Herald office,

Montreal, Dec. 12, 1842," which says—" Information has just arrived from Quebec of the loss of the English mail on its way to Halifax. The canoe upset in the St. Lawrence opposite Point Levi, and the whole of the bags are irrecoverably gone." A mail on its way to Halifax on the St. Lawrence must be the homeward-bound mail ; which has been received, and therefore cannot have been lost. The same letter says—" By advices from Kingston this morning, Sir Charles Begot was dying."
