Murrell issue

Sir: A major issue of principle has arisen on the Thames. A small firm of private barge operators. T. & D. Murrell, have been prevented from operating by the massive National Dock Labour Board and by `blacking' by dockers. Murrell took the issue to an industrial tribunal and won. The Dock Labour Board is appealing — and the blacking continues.

This is a case of a pygmy being squashed by a giant — supported by vast financial reserves and trade union strength. Murrell, quite obviously, find it difficult to sustain the costs of this important battle for freedom.

I suggest that your readers write to the Secretary of State for Employment, The Rt Hon Tom King, and express support for this small company. And any financial help for the case should be sent to: The Murrell Legal Fund, c/o Aims of Industry, 40 Doughty Street, London WCIN 2LF.

I suggest, too, that Mr King winds up the Dock Labour Board.
