Story book

Sir: Anecdotes about writers and artists in general give a unique insight into the life of any historical period, and are often funny in a special way too. In an age like ours, when personal letters are written much less than formerly and diaries of record seldom kept, there is a danger that many such anecdotes will die with their raconteurs.

To remedy this, 1 have been commis- sioned by Messrs Macmillan to gather a collection, and now ask your readers for their assistance in bringing to my attention material I should otherwise miss. Any anecdote (`narrative of amusing or interesting incident' — COD) of this century is eligible if it involves the arts or artists, including writers and the written word and the performing arts and artists. Sources should be given where possible. Attribution will be made where appro- priate. Material should be sent to me at the address below.

I regret that I cannot guarantee to reply, but material accompanied by a stamped and addressed envelope will be returned. I reserve the right to tinker with the text if it has not previously appeared in print.
