Mayaguez

Sir: Although not quite sharing your evangelical fervour on some issues, such as the EEC, I usually find that your editorial line is stimulating. reasoned and not normally far wide of the mark. Above all you usually start from a pristine conservative, or perhaps even Whig, position not found in any other publication. Indeed, to put it shortly, I am a Spectator addict.

However, I cannot fail to be rather distressed by your extraordinary and seemingly totally irrational outburst in your latest issue (May 24) over "Mayaguez — the bloody act." You seem to have at least one extraordinary sanctimonious and quirkly leader writer: I would not be surprised if the equally incongruously piece some weeks ago about private Employment Agencies had not flowed from the same pen. It seems to be the philosophy and style of "Peregrinations," a highly entertaining and splendidly trivial feature, overflowing into the editorial columns where more serious counsels should prevail. Indeed with my self-appointed expertise in Spectator close textual criticism, I would again hazard that there might be a connection. It seems a pity when such quirks and whims disfigure an otherwise highly prized publication.
