Sir: Whilst not wishing to diminish your correspondents' glee, they

both got our banner wrong. It read "Communists for Europe." As for Chairman Mao's support for the EEC, it is likely that our value as a counterweight to the Soviets had more to do with this than the consideration that the EEC is a "wonderful thing for communism." And more grist for the mill; the support of the large Western European Communist Parties added to Mao's millions, must make our viewpoint the majority within the world Communist movement.

Your correspondents are quite right not to fear the 'British' Left. They have adopted nationalism to such an extent, that their potential for advancing the socialist cause, is virtually non-existent. Richard Spicer Secretary, Comreunists for Europe 138 Lordship Road, Lo'hdon N16

Sir: The fact that the British Communist Party is anti-Common Market has always been a source of amazement; after all the Italian and French Communist Parties are in favour of the Common Market and they are far larger, more powerful and in every way more important than their diminutive British comrades. Why do not our home-grown Communists want to join them?

It is a matter Of conjecture whether the British Communist Party has adopted its anti-Market stance for the tactical considerations of increasing its popularity and attracting new recruits.

It is, in fact, a pity that the Communists are anti-Market for they are doing far more harm to the cause by espousing it than they could ever do by opposition.

Their latest faux pas is to put up a Communist to speak against the Common Market in Maidenhead Of all places! Is there any action more calculated to lose votes?

By such blunders they will offend far more electors than the trivial number which they can swing to the anti-Market side.

Thank goodness an organisation called "Communists for Europe" has now been formed; may all real Communists join it and may the decent people who have . been fooled into joining the Communist Party by its apparently anti-Market stand now see the error of their ways.
