of short stories of which the account of a little boy s outing in a " chairybang " and the description of a char- woman's evening work are the most successful. Indeed, the second sketch, called "Hand to the Plough," is extremely moving, and the heroine, Mrs. Hemmings, though her span of life is only ten pages, is drawn in such sharp detail that she becomes a living personage to the reader.
