Nearly two years have passed since the King went to

Belfast toinaugurate the Parliament of Northern Ireland. On Tuesday last the new session was opened by the Duke of Abercorn, the first Governor-General of Ulster. The reception he received on his state entry into Belfast and all the attendant ceremonies were the warm outward expression of the feelings of loyalty, gratitude and tranquillity with which the people of Northern Ireland face whatever the future may have in store for them. The contrast between their security and prosperity and the condition of the rest of Ireland is glaring. For although momentarilythere would appear to be a certain decrease in the internecine warfare in the South, we fear that it is merely from exhaustion, and that when both sides have recuperated the reign of terror will begin again.
