THE FURNITURE-COLLECTING CRAZE.

The mania for the collection of early American furniture

reached a high point in the sale by auction on Saturday of the famous Van Pelt Chippendale carved mahogany " High-

boy " for $44,000 ft8,800.) This is probably the record price for a piece of furniture. At the same sale a Benjamin Randolph Chippendale arm chair fetched $33,000. The $44,000 " Highboy " was made in Philadelphia about 1770, is seven feet eleven inches tall and forty-five inches wide, and has original strap scrolled Chippendale brasses with bail handles. It had been in the possession of the Van Pelt family in Philadelphia until 1921. The ;33,000 chair is described in Nutting's Furniture. Treasury and many other publications. The particular collecting craze of which these purchases are a symptom is widespread among Americans who can afford to indulge in it..
