A German Church Secession The persistence with which the schism

in the German Church refuses to yield to the strong treatment meted out by the Reichbishop, Dr. Muller, is increasingly visible in Westphalia, where the Opposition outnumbers, the mem- bers of the Government-sponsored Church.. Free synods have been formed there, declaring themselves to represent the only lawful Evangelical Church, and in that capacity they have put before the Reich Minister of the Interior a demand to be recognized by the State as an independent Evangelical Church. It is not yet quite clear before whom that request will come, for Church affairs may fall either to the Minister of the Interior, Dr. Frick, or the new Reich Minister of Science,. Education and Popular. Instruction, Herr Rust. The seceding bodies (though they would hardly be willing to describe themselves so) hope no doubt to be left in enjoyment of Church property and endow- ments, but that under present conditions in Germany seems a great deal to expect.
