Tony's phonies

From Mr Frederick Forsyth Sir: Mr Mark Seddon's article (Politics, 28 August) underscores what I and others have been noticing for some time: a grow- ing disenchantment mounting to hatred by broad masses of Old Labour supporters for the young national socialists who have hijacked their party.

As a Conservative I never had any prob- lem with the giants of Old Labour, from Attlee to Smith, but I have a lot of prob- lems with the new dictators hiding behind their phoney smiles.

The political landscape is indeed chang- ing, but not in the way President Tone describes. The new dichotomy seems to be not between democratic capitalism and democratic socialism, but between those who revere democracy and those who despise it. Odd to think that one day Mr Seddon and I may share the same foxhole!
