A SANCTUARY'S RECORD.

On the subject of bree "ng„ the Norfolk and Norwich Society have just issued ( Long, 31 Surrey Street, Norwieh), a very suggestive account of the season, especially in 'the bird sanctuaries, recording that at Blakeney (though not in Miss Turner's place Of exile,. at Scott Heady the season was the best for breeding' ever' known. An all our natural history annals there is scarcely another instance of rapid multiplication that can quite 'parallel the increase of Sandwich terns, those great swallows of the sea, that nest on the Blakeney '-The sight of their packed- nests last summer was cer- tainly the most remarkable that I-personally have ever .seen. It is-possible-that birds have their cycles as well as mammals; but the length of the migration makes scientific inquiry altogether too difficult. We never discover why one year we see no redstarts, or what were the causes of the great quail years of the past and the crossbill years of more recent. times.
