Counterblast from the clergy

Sir: The 'counterblast' from the clergy (21 June) about Mr Kennedy's two articles is fundamentally unanimous and a strong expression of the Christian point of view.

As an earlier (lay) counterblaster I should like to make one point about the Rev G. Bowden's letter. He seemed to say in dif- ferent words exactly what Mr Kennedy mentioned concerning too much church- going in youth, but then took him to task for writing articles about it.

But Mr Kennedy's point was a worth- while and valid one in that thousands of potentially thinking boys and girls have been numbed through the years by being forced to attend church or chapel at school up to about thirteen times a week.

One hopes that modern chaplains and headmasters of C of E schools have seen the light about this.
