B.B.C. RELIG1uUS BROADCASTS

Sla,—Last week's Spectator contained a quarter-page advertisement fr the Rationalist Press Association asking for postcard " Yes " or "No replies to the following questions:

i. Do you consider the B.B.C. policy of propaganda for a particu form of religion consistent with the democratic principle?

2. Are you in favour of a reversal of this policy which will secur the freedom of discussion embodied in the Atlantic Charter?

3. In view of our alliance with non-Christian nations, and of di world-wide range of B.B.C. broadcasts, do you consider that inter national harmony is fostered by a State-controlled organisation tha recognises only one religious system?

I replied to the advertisement as follows:

"It is impossible to answer ' Yes' or ' No' to the three que tions, because the B.B.C. religious broadcasts cannot properly described as 'Propaganda for a particular form of religion. .1 broadcasts are proved valuable helps to the followers of the Christi faith, which is based not only on the historical fact, but on th personal experience of Christians, that Jesus Christ is the Son of G Therefore, discussion on such lines (question 2) of those facts 0 the wireless would be improper, if not blasphemous. Also (qu tion 3) for similar reasons it would be improper for a Christia country to broadcast the faiths of other countries.. The preset dangerous condition of the British Empire and its punishment

fundamentally due to its neglect to follow Christ and the Christi Di faith ; and such an organisation as the Rationalist Press Associati is therefore a danger to the Empire's physical and spiritual recovery —Yours, &c., P. A. Straw. Highfieki, Sidcup.
