The consultations between these former rivals are significant and very

characteristic of Chinese warfare. Consultations about the disposition of troops arc, how- ever, only a slighter aspect of a much wider movement which is reported by the Shanghai correspondent of the Times. He says that a trial of strength is going on between the moderates and the extremists of the Kuomin- tang, and that the moderates would like to come to terms with Chang Tso-tin. If this policy came to anything there would be a compromise between North and South and the Cantonese would content themselves with that part of China which lies South of tit^ Yangtze. In tentatively proposing such a compromise Chang Tso-tin has laid clown the condition that Russian influence must be eliminated in the South. Thus the trial of strength is between the moderates who want to accept ('hang Tso- lin's terms and the pro-Russian extremists will do not.
