SAVINGS IN EXPENDITURE.

In the matter of Expenditure, the Chancellor must be congratulated upon having kept well within his Estimates —including the Supplementaries—of £824,000,000. It is true that Ordinary Expenditure was about £2,000,000 in excess of the Estimate, but that was more than due to the increase in the debt charge owing to the high rates of interest which have had to be paid on Treasury Bills, In the case of actual Supply Expenditure the total outlay for the year was only £847,600,000, as compared with an estimate of 1353,765,000.
