Snowballing

Is this Leavis-Snow business going on for ever? My American correspondence suggests that the row is having even bigger repercussions in the United States than here. No doubt this is because Sir Charles has been particularly in- fluential there, There are signs, however, that some take the business less seriously than Dr. Leavis would like. The New York columnist, say, who writes to me: 'If you see Dr. Leavis, thank him and ask him if he is free for an American campaign tour. We have our prob- lems here, too. I figure on booking him against Robert Frost in Boston in May, moving him down to Charlotte, NC, for Carl Sandburg, and then winding him up in Madison Square Garden for a tag team exhibition with Tennessee Williams and Cardinal Spellman.'
