In the House of Commons on Thursday; July 28th, the

Minister of Health announced the terms of reference- of a Royal Commis.Oon on London Squares. They are • shortly : To report' on those open 'spaces; how they are held and used ; . their desirability as open spaces ; whether they - should. be permanently safeguarded ; if so, how. Lord Landonderry is- to be - the chairman, Mr. Ronald Norman will- excellently- represent the London County Council, and Sir George Duckworth is sure to be a very useful member. It is • a difficult question be'mnse might see these open spaces all built over with advantage to the housing problems of overcrowding and slums, and yet London wants more spaces where the air is uncontaminated and wants them very badly. We hope the .Cominission will consider particularly the opening of some_ of these gardens to school children in the August holidays. We may note here with great satisfaction that the Duke of York's appeal for the National Playing Fields Association has brought in nearly R300,000, besides gifts of many acres of land.
