NEWS OF THE WEEK

EGYPT is quiet. . The great justification of the British Government's policy: is its success. The dangers of riot and .assassination seem to have been averted, and this has been done with a minimum of interference with Egyptian institutions. The policy of giving Egypt the full amount of independence which was offered in the Declaration of 1922 has not been touched, nor is there any thought of modifying it. We have written in a leading article about the character of the settlement yet to be reached, and here we will only add, as regards the possibility of getting the ultimate co-operation of the League of Nations in Egypt and the Sudan, that Mr. Chamberlain's speech on Wednesday, in which he pointed out that Egyptian and Sudanese affairs are not covered by the Covenant, does not upset our opinion. We agree with what he said, but we should like volun- tarily to call the League in aid all the same with regard to certain specified matters. Mr. Chamberlain's visit to the Council of the League at Rome is a wise move.
