The proportionate weight of Ireland in the United Kingdom continues

to decline. It was in 1815 a third, but according to the Registrar-General's Return for the quarter ending the 30th of June, 1875, the resident population of the United Kingdom at Midsummer was 32,737,405. Of these, 23,944,459 resided in England and Wales and 3,495,214 in Scotland, showing for this island a population of 27,439,673 against 5,297,732 in the other one. Ireland, therefore, is in population now less than a sixth of the United Kingdom.
