We had hoped to be able to avoid the supreme

humiliation of publicly protesting before the civilized world that the Lord Chief Justice of England was not a worthy representative of the Empire on so great an occasion as the Peace Conference. We were assured indeed that there was no intention on the part of the Government to wound so deeply the feelings of • the better pact of the 'nation.,

We are convinced, however, that the Morning Post would not have taken without warrant the line it taken, and we must therefore, though it is much against our will to touch the matter, give our fullest and strongest endorsement to its protest.
