Sir: There are degrees of viciousness and enormity in terrorists'

crimes. What makes the anger at the present one so righteous is the fact that the bombhappy Irish fanatics who perpetrated it lacked any solid motivation. These indiscriminate murderers and maimers were activated by ancient historical grudges rather than acting in sheer desperation to draw attention to the plight of a homeless and down-trodden people. This being so, the idea of. sentencingany convicted bombplanters to 'life' rather than to speedy and just extinction is just too intrinsically absurd for uncorrupted wits to contemplate. In the long run the benevolent crackpot is almost as baneful as the violent fanatic. Finally, with regard to that invaluable document, the identity card, why should it cause any uneasiness to anyone happy with their own identity?
