A HARD WINTER FORETOLD {To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] SIR,—On May 16th an old man, a pensioner of my firm, Said to me, " We are going to have a very hard winter." I said, " How's that, Jim ? " and he replied, " The corn is so late coming up. It has been so long in the ground this spring." Have any of your readers ever heard of this as precursory of a severe winter ?—I am, Sir, &c.,
