The tragedy of the General

Sir : The Gaullist foreign policy of French and European independence is supported by many students and workers who demand his departure.

In furtherance of that policy France has in- curred heavy costs of nuclear and space endeavour at the expense of goodies at home. The General's tragedy, and ours, has been the failure—for which responsibility is not con- fined to one side of the Channel—to establish a European defence, diplomacy and tech- nology based on Franco-British partnership. Let us, however, not despair of France or of Europe. NAFTA, if feasible, would further divide Europe and make defi americain' irresis- tible. France's troubles will slow the integra- tion of the Common Market and there may be opportunity for a more flexible approach to the problem of Britain's membership of a European confederacy, linked through London and Paris with African and other associates overseas and ready to welcome in due time the peoples of eastern Europe.
