An appeal for charity

Sir: Two articles in your pages recently have attacked the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. (`The truth about the loss of royalties', 27 July; Country life, 24 August). Please allow us to set the record straight.

We offer a lifelong commitment to every guide dog owner. A guide dog normally, works for around seven years before retire- ment, at which time we train the owner with a replacement dog. If we were to spend our investments, they would last for less than half the working life of a guide dog; each guide dog owner may need up to ten dogs during his or her lifetime. Our strong financial position means that we will not have to let our clients down.

In addition to our guide-dog work, we provide a huge range of services for many thousands of visually impaired people.

These criticisms and their recycled ver- sions written by other journalists are caus- ing incalculable harm, eventually to those visually impaired people whom we seek to help.
