Little jewel
Sir: Mr David Astor (Letters 23/30 Decem- ber) obviously thinks that everyone shares his contempt for the delightful writings by Mr Wallace Arnold of Afore Ye Go. For many years I have been a subscriber to The Spectator — the first instance being greatly attracted by the inclusion of articles by W. F. Deedes and Peregrine Worsthorne. When these contributors ceased to write, I thought of discontinuing my subscription. However, to do so would mean parting with Afore Ye Go by Mr Wallace Arnold.
I think that anyone who can thus admire and enjoy Afore Ye Go proves that it is far from being boring, pompous or humour- less! In fact, it is the first article I read when receiving your journal on Friday.
So — carry on please Mr Wallace Arnold. I, and doubtless many others eagerly look forward to your little 'jewel' every week.
