I see that a Leeds magistrate has persuaded the local

Stipendiary to overrule the refusal of the local Chief Constable to grant him a. firearms certificate in respect Of a revolver With which he desires to' repel assaults on his hOuse or property. I daresay revolvers are safer in the hands of magistrates' than of ordinary people, in spite of Some magistrates I. have known, but it is quite certain there-are fai too many revolvers -in private people's hands in this country at present. We have always refused to arm our police and never had reason to • regret the decision. In America the police are armed, with the result that ldwbreakers take care to arm them- selves too, and if possible to fire first. The Home Office, I believe, considers all is as it should. be. I am disposed to think myself that the possession of revolvers by private citizens ihoulci be definitely prohibited. ' * * *
