From Mr Vincenzo lannelli Sir: In October 1984 I was posted as a UN observer in the Middle East (Untso) where I spent the next two years covering Syria (the Golan Heights), Jordan, South Lebanon, Israel and Beirut. When I left Italy, I was one hundred per cent proIsraeli. They were, in my opinion, all 'heroes fighting for their country versus a bunch of thugs, villains and cowards.
It took me two weeks to change my mind, having witnessed all sorts of horrors and violations of international conventions perpetrated by the Israeli army. I have never been a racist and I could not care less about somebody's religion or skin colour, but, if racism means to dislike the tad guys', then I am a racist.
I could go on and on, but, as Conrad Black pointed out, the issue is much too complicated to be summarised briefly and I am therefore, with all due respect for Mr Black's opinion, obliged to conclude with this: `Taki, I'm with you one hundred per cent!'
