TO IMPROVE THE GARDENS OF SQUARES.
[To THE EDITOR OP THE "SPECTATOR."] SIR,—May I venture to suggest that your contributor (Spectator, July 14th) who is so anxious to improve the London squares should look at Portman Square, where a great deal has already been done that he recommends ? It has been laid out by one of the first landscape gardeners. Great care is bestowed upon the cultivation of the various plants which will live in the middle of London smoke, and of which there are not a few. Much remains still to be done, but the results are highly satisfactory, and a few years will, we trust, see it as full of brightness and beauty as a country garden.—I am, Sir, &c., ONE OF THE RESIDENTS IN THE SQUA.RE.
