COURSES FOR NON-GRADUATES
Sts,—May I draw your attention to the Advanced Study Courses for Non-Graduates. These courses offer opportunities to women engaged in earning their living, more especially those in clerical, technical or adminis- trative employments, to spend their summer holiday in pursuing study under university conditions. Residence of four weeks is arranged at one of three Oxford colleges or at a hostel attached to one of these and at Girton College, Cambridge. The period of residence is during July or August. Students must be 21 years of age and must be able to show a good previous standard of education; if possible up to Higher Certificate standard. They pay £6 10s. a week, which covers all expenses. They will be expected to study one selected subject only, making their own choice. Individual tuition is provided by teachers of university standing, and every attempt is made, as far as circumstances permit, to give the students some idea of the university atmosphere. At Oxford, the Dele- gacy for Extra-Mural Studies is making the tuition arrangements, and students will attend the general lectures organised by the Delegacy and they will form an integral part of the Delegacy Summer School. This year, also, residence for all students at Oxford will be at Lady Margaret Hall from July 16th to August 13th.
A special feature of the scheme is its continuity. Students are expected to continue their reading during the following winter in their leisure time, and are assisted to do so by correspondence tuition or by other means. Above all, they are asked to come back to the university
the next summer, and, if they can, for a third year. In this way they get something like a real grasp -of their subject. Employers may be applied to for bursaries or for special leave, and several important firms have been very generous in this respect. Owing to pressure On laboratory space students cannot be taken in the physical sciences. Inquiries should be addressed to Mrs. Holdsworth, 1 Netherwoods Road, Headington
