The phrase " by and large " worries me a

little. Someone writes asking me to attack it. Logically I can't refuse, but for " on the whole," "all things considered," it is undeniably handy. Then why not say " on the whole," it may be asked. I really don't know, except that one sometimes likes a change. Jaws.
