In making regulations for choosing the scholars Mr. Rhodes .directs

that "regard shall be bad to (i) his literary and scholastic attainments (ii) his fondness of and success in manly outdoor sports such as cricket football and the like (iii) his qualities of manhood truth courage devotion to duty sym- pathy for and the protection of the weak kindliness unselfish- ness and fellowship and (iv) his exhibition during school days of moral force of character and of instincts to lead and to take an interest in his schoolmates for those latter attri- butes will be likely in afterlife to guide him to esteem the performance of public duties as the highest aim." No student is to be disqualified on racial or religious grounds. In order that there shall be a bond of fellowship between the scholars Mr. Rhodes directs that the trustees shall annually invite the past and present scholars to dine with them, and to meet distinguished persons in sympathy with the will.
