Sir Denis Brogan
The death of Sir Denis Brogan deeply distressed all his friends and admirers in journalistic, academic and many other circles. A renowned expert on American and French history, Sir Denis also had gifts in many other areas of life: he was a superb raconteur, and endlessly prolific of ideas. We at The Spectator have often benefitted from his cheering visits, and more often still from his splendid contributions to our columns over the years. Indeed, the short article or essay form seemed to suit Brogan best, though he published many books. One essay in particular, 'The illusion of American omnipotence,' written many years ago, can still be profitably read as an analysis of the present decline and near breakdown of the United States. It was Brogan's special contribution as a teacher, writer and scholar so to predict the courses of events, and instruct others in the understanding of the deeper and more underlying elements in history. Though his later years were disturbed by illness, his work will long remain as an inspiration to students and general readers alike.
