PALINDROMES.

[To THE EDITOR OF TEE "SPECTATOR"]

Ssn,—A correspondent in the Spectator of July 5th asks for examples of English palindromes. A very interesting collection is that in the "Twentieth Century Puzzle Book," by A. Cyril Pearson, M.A. To quote from that book there are :—

Napoleon's pcaindroMe.

"Able was I ere I saw Elba."

A Peace Palindrome.

"Snug and raw was I ere I raw war and guns."

The excellent adage.

"Egad, a base tone denotes a bad age."

Question and answer.

"Do good's deeds live never even? Evil's deeds do, 0 God."

A German example.

" Bei Leid lieh stats Heil die Lieb'."
