PALINDROMES.
[To THE EDITOR OF TEE "SPECTATOR"]
Ssn,—A correspondent in the Spectator of July 5th asks for examples of English palindromes. A very interesting collection is that in the "Twentieth Century Puzzle Book," by A. Cyril Pearson, M.A. To quote from that book there are :—
Napoleon's pcaindroMe.
"Able was I ere I saw Elba."
A Peace Palindrome.
"Snug and raw was I ere I raw war and guns."
The excellent adage.
"Egad, a base tone denotes a bad age."
Question and answer.
"Do good's deeds live never even? Evil's deeds do, 0 God."
A German example.
" Bei Leid lieh stats Heil die Lieb'."
