We . are extremely sorry to hear that the University
of _London has received from the Treasury Solicitor formal notice to quit the site which is now occupied by the Institute of Historical Research. This is the result of the failure to arrive at any 'decision about the purchase of the whole Bloomsbury site for the University of London.. The Institute had, so to speak, pegged out a claim—with official encouragement—in the greater site and is now called upon to abandon it. This in spite of theifact that the Treasury has been subsidizing the Institute to the extent of £2,000 a year. The Institute, close to the British Museum, is in a wonderfully appropriate position for its purpose; it has been most efficiently managed, and its great usefulness was only a foreshadowing of what seemed to be the promise of its future, The temporary buildings cost about £24,000. The .Library of 27,000 volumes has become the centre of research for advanced students from all over the ly °rid. We sincerely hope that the Institute may be saved. .
