State capitalism
Suh: I have just seen that damn Yankee Nicholas von Hoffman's scandalous re- write of history in his Spectator article for 26 February. He has the crust, the immortal rind, to say: 'Relations between Mexico and the United States have been poisoned since 1848 when we stole Texas, California and a few other trinkets from our neighbours to the south.'
As the husband of a yellow rose of Texas, sub, I resent that as a foul slur and imputa- tion on the mightiest state in the Union. Texas was an independent republic from 1836 to 1846. Some say it still should be. It applied for membership of the US in 1836 and in 1845 annexation was approved by the Texan and US congresses. Some theft. Some trinket.
I suggest Mr von Hoffman leave the ped- dling of phantasies to his Old World namesake Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoff- mann.
