Heseltine factors
Sir: Mr Heseltine's insistence that Mrs Thatcher will lead the Conservative Party into the next election — however much we doubt his sincerity — must be seen as shrewd politics on his part.
Julius Caesar's 'selfless' refusal of the Roman crown, it is said, brought him even wider acclaim from the populus. Having said that, I fancy Heseltine more as the 'lean and hungry' Cassius: such men are dangerous. Since this year's Ides of March have been and gone, will we have to wait until next year for the conspirators to gather on the steps of Parliament, waiting for Mrs Thatcher to arrive for Prime Minis- ter's Question Time?
The political augurs say that the omens do not look favourable. But is there a Brutus in the Cabinet?
