The Mystery of Wardale Court, and other Stories. By Andre

Hope. (Wilsons and Milne.)—The first and longest story in this volume shows considerable power. The same praise may, indeed, be given to all, but the " Mystery" is the best; " A Russian Tale" —Russia, if we remember right, being familiar ground to the author—coming next. There is no doubt about the thoroughness of the " surprise " in the "Mystery." The most ingenious reader will hardly have guessed where the secret lay. But is not the element of horror added with too liberal a hand P We do not want to see everything through rose-colour ; but rose is not more untrue to nature than black, and is certainly more agreeable.
