Unaffected coverage
Sir: May I draw your attention to a factual error in Paul Johnson's article (The press, 29 September) entitled 'No more cleft sticks'. He says that there was a plan to close the Daily Express bureau in New York which has since been cancelled. This is not the case. Until now we have had three men based in New York. Two will stay there; the third in future will be based in Los Angeles. That was always our intention.
Mr Johnson appears to have relied on Jeffrey Blyth, writing recently in the UK Press Gazette, for his information. Mr Blyth's story, unfortunately, was inaccu- rate and we have pointed out to the UK Press Gazette that they had in fact carried a correct account of our plans in an earlier issue. What we have done in New York is take steps to reduce substantially the over- heads of the operation, particularly those attributable to office accommodation, sec- retarial staff etc. Our editorial coverage of the US scene should not be affected.
