A party for England?
Sir: The plan to roll back the Conservative party from Scotland (‘Revealed: how the Conservative party is planning to split’, 7 April), although a setback to Scottish unionists, would be a blessing in disguise for England’s ethnic minorities. The break-up of the United Kingdom, largely due to policies adopted by New Labour since 1997, is now almost inevitable. The resultant chaos is bound to unleash forces of nationalism in Britain’s current composite.
While Scotland and Wales already have nationalist parties that are capable of containing and guiding this new surge towards positive ends, England has nothing of the sort it has the BNP, but unlike the Scottish National Party, the BNP is inward-looking, xenophobic and racist. An exclusively English Conservative party, with firm bases in patriotism, racial equality and tolerance, would be well suited to fill in the political void in England that may accompany the dismemberment of the United Kingdom.
