There is now the greatest and best of all the

opportunities we have had of freeing the country from the abuse of drink without incurring the innumerable difficulties and disadvantages of Prohibition. We certainly ought to seize this opportunity. State Purchase would take the sting and the curse out of alcohol. No one would be incited to drink because it is to the interest of some private person to make him drink. We should also find that we had agreed upon nationalization in the one instance in which nationalization is desirable. The smaller the profits, the greater the moral gain to the people. We sincerely hope that the Labour Party will help in this great cause, and it is a good sign that a campaign, headed by Mr. J. H. Thomas and others, has been started inside the Labour Party. All the same, we would advise those who believe in the nationalization of drink not to rely upon the Labour Party.
