A Book of Sporting Painters, by Walter Shaw Sparrow (John
Lane, 42s.) will be more interesting to lovers of sport than to lovers of painting, as it is rather a biographical survey of the painters than an estimate of their work. Mr. Sparrow has done much delving into registers and catalogues and has unearthed an amazing amount of information, but it is of the type that will appeal rather to collectors than to connoisseurs. The excellence of the few coloured illustrations that there are makes us regret that Mr. Sparrow has not found it possible to include more of them. The book is admirably indexed and attractively produced.
