On Thursday Mr. Baxter also made a speech to others
of his constituents at Brechln, in which he addressed himself to the -charge brought against him of false economy, which he repelled with great acerbity. He went very deeply into the subject of the mixture of Newcastle with South Wales coals,—bituminous with authracite,—which has been irreverently termed iu seine quarters " Baxter's mixture," and showed that he had real scientific authority for its greater heat-generating powers, and that he has saved the Navy £18,000 a year by his operations. Apparently Mr. Baxter has been doing very right, but let us counsel him not to be so thin-skinned in future. The only effect of Mr. Baxter's wrath ou the writer of what he calls the "miserable paragraph in the Pall Mall Gazelle," iu which he was attacked, will probably be to make that happy author say smilingly to himself that that arrow went home.
