The Cape Elections The elections in the Cape Province for
the Senate resulted last week in the return of four Nationalists and four members of the South African Party. The South African Party had expected to win five seats out of the eight. The Cape Town correspondent of the Times points out that the Government will still be at least twelve votes short of a two thirds majority in a joint sitting of the two Houses. It is significant that the Cape. Nationalist Congress has unanimously passed a resolution that if the Government should fail to carry their Native Representation Bill by the necessary two thirds majority at a joint sitting the Union Act must be amended. The British Parliament would certainly not have ratified the Union Act unless the Act had contained the two thirds provision which is rightly regarded as safeguarding the native vote in the Cape. This is a matter which must be watched carefully.
