Sir: Following recent medical advice to overcome insomnia by natural methods, awake at 2.30 a.m., I picked up a magazine from the side of my bed to lull myself into sleep. Unfortunatey it was the Spectator. Hav- ing gleefully rattled through several articles I then spent the rest of the night pondering the possibility that Mrs Thatcher had stage managed the whole Peter Wright affair (thanks to Auberon Waugh).

Next time I can't sleep, I'll make sure I get hold of the New Statesman!
