M'Bow on censorship
Sir: As a comment on Dileep Padgaonkar's letter ('New Unesco order', 24 November) let me quote (after L. Unger of Kultura), the response of the head of the organisa- tion which he represents to a question regarding censorship. The question was put to Mr M'Bow diming his visit to Poland in July. His response was that 'in the course of his visit no one complained to him about censorship'. One can argue that such an answer is symptomatic of extreme stupidity. One can argue that it is symptomatic of crass indif- ference. One can also argue, of course, that it is symptomatic of both these traits. But one is obliged to regard the remark as a sample of the Unesco 'world communica- tion and information order' of which Mr Padgaonkar is so proud.
