Of all the tributes that have been paid to King
George VI in recent years there is one that I would put higher almost than any other. During the King's visit to South Africa in 1947 he was talking to a Bechuana Chief. At the end the Chief said : " When a European talks to me it is a white man talking to a black man. When you talk to me, Sir, it is like one man talking to another." The story appeared in this column at the time I heard it; I make no apology for recalling it now.
