JOHN PEEL [To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] SIR,—I haven't

the faintest idea why John Peel wore a white beaver hat or indeed if he really did so nor (dare I say it ?) do I greatly care. In my notice of the book under question I merely quoted the author's description of the famous sportsman, so if Mr. Rawnsley wants to quarrel with anyone let it not be with me. I should, however, like to add that, though it is my business in another capacity to be an imagi- native writer, the time (unfortunately) is not yet when I should dare to invent a single thing about so solid an English institution as John Peel.—I am, Sir, etc., Your Reviewer.
