Last Saturday the Prime Minister broadcast a message to the

nation. He said that he wanted to make it as clear as he could that the Government were not fighting to lower the miners' standard of living, or anybody else's standard. " That suggestion is being spread abroad. It is not true." Many people, he went on, were saying " I do not hold with the general strike, but I feel a good deal of sympathy with the miners."
