Speaking up for Fred
From Margaret Currey Sir: I hold no brief for Zambia's President Frederick ChiJuba, whose party is mired in charges of corruption, but he is not just the comic-cuts character that Hugh Russell so scornfully presents (Right, said Fred', 1 September). He did much good after the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) was elected in 1991, freeing up a shattered economy and privatising the country's massive copper mines, which had been run into the ground as state enterprises under his predecessor, Kenneth Kaunda. In the past 18 months, thanks to Chituba's policies, South African mining companies have poured millions of dollars into the industry, bringing renewed hope to the country as a whole as small businesses thrive again and tourism booms.
